As a subset of forensic science, we define forensic engineering and investigation as the scientific evaluation and examination related to failure and/or cause of damage or injury.

According to the NFPA 9211 forensics is defined as “the application of science to answer questions of interest to the legal system.”

According to Black’s Law Dictionary, forensic engineering is defined as “the use of engineering principles or analysis in a lawsuit, usually through an expert witness’s testimony.”

According to the National Academy of Forensic Engineers, forensic engineering is defined as “the application of the art and science of engineering in matters which are in, or may possibly relate to, the jurisprudence [legal] system, inclusive of alternative dispute resolution.”
